Overhang Requirements:

Maximum legal overhang allowed is 3' (three feet) in front and 6' (six feet) in rear. Overhang exceeding these dimensions will require a over length permit.

Police Escorts:

$45.00 per hour - no minimum for mileage or hours. Must submit an application and sign a contract agreeing to the above.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for five (5) days.

Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset, Monday through Friday.  See ôWeekend Travelö section for further information on Weekend restrictions.

Loads or vehicles that are permitted for over-weight only, up to and including 110,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight, but not over-dimension, is allowed travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.  Over-weight loads or vehicles exceeding 110,000 lbs. are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset, Monday through Friday.

Weekend Travel

Permitted loads or vehicles with dimensions that do not exceed 75' long x 14' wide x 14' high are allowed travel where appropriate from Sunrise to Sunset, seven (7) days a week.  Vehicles or loads traveling only on Interstate Routes, with dimensions that do not exceed 95' long x 14' wide x 14'6ö high, are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset, seven (7) days a week.  Oversize loads or vehicles exceeding these dimensions up to and including 16' wide are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset, Monday through Friday.  Travel for vehicles or loads that exceed 16' wide is allowed on Sundays, only from Sunrise to 12:00 Noon.

Loads or vehicles that are permitted for over-weight only, up to and including 110,000 lbs., but not over-dimension, is allowed travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.  Over-weight loads or vehicles exceeding 110,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset, Monday through Friday.

Routes that cannot safely accommodate the above dimensions and weights may be re-routed, denied, or be subject to more restricted travel times.  This can occur on a case by case basis, being determined by several different variables.  If this is the case, applicant will be notified upon approval of Permit.

Weekend Travel for permitted loads, when allowed, is given upon request.   Permit applicant should note on their application if they have a desire for weekend travel.  Be sure to notify your carrier if you require weekend travel so that they can gain authorization to do so.

Divisible Loads

Permitted loads must be reduced to their lowest possible dimensions and weights.  Permitted cargo should be loaded in a manner that its lowest possible dimensions are in place.  If any items or attachments are removed to reduce size, they must be shipped as a separate load.

Exceptions

Blades, buckets, counterweights, etc. must be removed if their width exceeds 12' wide.  If these items or attachments are removed, they must be shipped on a separate trailer as a separate load.

Restricted Travel

Permitted loads are restricted from travel during inclement weather such as heavy rain, snow, ice, sleet, high winds, or other hazardous conditions.

Turnpike Restrictions

Permitted loads or vehicles whose overall dimensions do not exceed 80' long x 14' wide x 13'10ö high may operate on the West Virginia Turnpike without a Special Turnpike Permit.  A load or vehicle that is permitted to exceed any of these dimensions may obtain a Special Turnpike Permit as the West Virginia Turnpike Toll Plaza.  The maximum dimensions allowed under a Special Turnpike Permit are 95' long x 14' wide x 16' high.  Anything over these dimensions will require special review and approval from the Turnpike Administration Office at (304)-925-4906 prior to arriving at the Toll Plaza.  The cost of all over-size unit permits for the West Virginia Turnpike is $3.50 per toll plaza traveled through.  All loads or vehicles that exceed 14' wide are restricted to Sunday Travel only on the Turnpike.

Spring Weight Restrictions

Seasonal Weight Restrictions will be in effect on Secondary Highways only generally from January through April, and will be limited to a ninety (90) day period within one year.  When Spring Weight Restrictions are in effect, weights restrictions will be posted on effected highways.  Weight restrictions will also be posted on an applicant's permit if necessary.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles that are over 110' long x 15' wide x 15' high and 110,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight are considered Super-loads, and must be approved by a State Engineer to determine required route, and permit type.  All Super-load applications for weight must pass a Bridge Analysis prior to approval.  Super-load applications should be allowed seven (7) days for processing and approval.  Loads or vehicles that exceed 200,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight should be allowed between fourteen (14) and twenty-one (21) days for processing and approval.
