79 US18 West of the NE state line. *Note:State Highway system allows wider loads to move without
escorts than the Federal Interstate system in South Dakota. For load with excessive
height and weight, # of
escorts depends strictly on specific routes, (clearances are ultimately
the responsibility of the permittee)
Specific Traffic Handling
A lane at least 10' wide must be allowed for normal
traffic to pass an over wide load. Special handling is
required if load extends more than 2' into adjacent
driving or passing lane or if the load width does not
allow normal traffic to pass unless either vehicle
drives on the should. Special handling includes escorts
and flag person located in front or rear of vehicle or
both as required by permit.

Holiday Restrictions:

South Dakota does not enforce restrictions on oversize loads during holidays. All permitted loads must abide by the standard weekend and operating hours.

Overhang Requirements:

Maximum legal overhang allowed is 3' (three feet) in front and 4' (four feet) in rear. Overhang exceeding these dimensions will require a over length permit.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for three (3) travel days.

Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, seven (7) days a week.  Loads that do not exceed 10' wide and 14'6รถ high may travel continuously on the Interstate Highway System.  Vehicles or loads that are permitted for weight only are allowed travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

Weekend Travel

Permitted loads are allowed travel on Saturdays and Sundays from one-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset.

Divisible Loads

No permits will be issued for the movement of a load that can be easily reduced in size or weight.  All cargo must be reduced to its smallest possible size and weight in order to gain approval of permit.  All parts and attachments that are removed in order to reduce size must be shipped as a separate load.

Exceptions

There are no exceptions to the Divisible Load Laws.

Restricted Travel

Travel is restricted in congested areas during high volume traffic periods.  Permitted loads are restricted from travel during periods of inclement weather.

Spring Weight Restrictions

Seasonal Weight Restrictions may be implemented anytime after February 15th.  Seasonal Weight Restrictions will be posted to this States page as they are updated by the Department of Transportation.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles that are 130' long x 16' wide x 16' high are considered Super-loads.  Applications for Super-loads should include information such as axle spacing, the number of tires, weight of each axle, and desired routes of travel.  Super-load applications should be allowed up to three (3) days for processing and approval.
