On 2 Lane Highways
Width over 12' up to 14'6" 1 escort
Width over 14'6" 2 (front and rear)
Length over 80' up to 90' 1 escort
Length over 90' 2 (front and rear)
Height over 14' 1 escort

2 (front and rear)
Building - also with police escort 2 (front and rear)
Cranes - interstate moves of 12' or more 2 (front and rear)

Overhang Requirements:

No limit to front and technically no limit for the rear. However, if load is 48? or more in the rear, red flags are required during the day and lights are required at night.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for five (5) consecutive days.

Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel from one-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset.

Weekend Travel

Permitted loads are restricted from travel on the weekends.

Divisible Loads

Single Trip Permits are issued only for non-divisible loads.  Annual permits are issued for loads that are reducible.  In this case, manufacturer must certify that the vehicle is capable of hauling permitted weight.  Common maximum weight for a five (5) axle combination is 104,800 lbs. These permits are only issued to overweight vehicle loads, and not over dimensional loads.

Exceptions

Bulldozers are considered non-divisible loads in the State of Rhode Island.  Blades, buckets, and counterweights do not have to be removed for shipment.

Restricted Travel

No traveling is allowed when road conditions, weather conditions or visibility makes traveling hazardous.

Spring Weight Restrictions

There are no Seasonal Weight Restrictions for the State of Rhode Island.

Superload Requirements

The State of Rhode Island determines its Super-load permits on an individual, case by case basis as there is no stated minimum for Super-loads.  However, a load or vehicle that is 90' long x 14' wide x 13'6รถ high and 120,000 lbs. or more should be submitted for review.  These dimensions previously mentioned should be referred to as a basis for Super-load reference.  Loads or vehicles that are 200,000 lbs. or more will require an outside engineering firm to survey any proposed routes prior to submitting application.  Super-load applications should be allowed up to ten (10) days for processing and approval.
