Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel from one-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset, Monday through Saturday.  Loads that are permitted for over-weight only are allowed continuous travel, twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

Weekend Travel

Permitted loads are allowed travel on Saturdays from Sunrise to Sunset.  Permitted loads are restricted from travel on Sundays.

Divisible Loads

Permits are not issued for divisible loads.  Permits will only be granted for loads that cannot reasonably be dismantled or reduced to their lowest possible size and weight.  Items and attachments that have been removed in order to reduce size or weight are required to be shipped as a separate load.

Equipment such as bulldozers with blades or other protruding sharp objects of any kind which create an over-width dimension ranging from 10'6" wide to 13'6" wide must be loaded in such a manner as to place the blade or protruding sharp object to the rear of the hauling equipment.  No permit will be issued for blades or protruding sharp objects creating width in excess of 13'6" wide.  If blades or other protruding sharp objects exceed 13'6" wide, they must be removed and shipped as a separate load.

Restricted Travel

Permitted loads that are 85' long or greater in length and/or 12'6" wide or greater will not be allowed within any statewide city limits, or any heavily traveled adjoining commercial or residential areas between the hours of 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

Permitted loads are restricted from travel during inclement weather such as driving rains, snow, ice, sleet, and high winds.

Spring Weight Restrictions

There are no Seasonal Weight Restrictions for the State of Tennessee.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles that are 120' long x 16' wide x 15' high and 180,000 lbs. or more are considered Super-loads.  Super-load applications must be submitted in writing and contain a detailed proposal of movement, detailed sketch of vehicle and cargo, tire size, axle spacing, axle weight and overall dimensions of hauling vehicle, cargo, and the combination of both.  Loads that are 16' wide and 150,000 lbs. or more must contact the Bridge Department for Routing requirements.

Super-load permits are valid for six (6) days.  Super-load applications should be allowed up to five (5) days for processing and approval.
