Police Escorts:
24 hour advance notice is required for police escort. Cost of police usually $50.00 set up fee +
$2.00/mile + any overtime accrued while on job. Police escort may be required during period
while any provision of the act is being broken. 

Also may be required if conditions warrant them. Escorting by dept. personnel maybe required if
conditions warrant.

Convoys are prohibited: except for military convoys, oversize loads shall not travel within 1,000
feet of another permitted oversize load traveling in the same direction.

Overhang Requirements:

Maximum legal overhang allowed is 6' (six feet) in the rear, may be exceeded for combinations carrying non-divisible loads not exceeding 70' (seventy feet) in length.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for five (5) travel days.

Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel in non-urbanized areas from Sunrise to Sunset.  If a load has legal dimensions, and is permitted for weight that is not exceeding 107,000 lbs. vehicles operating at prevailing speeds may operate twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week except during Holiday restrictions, and inclement weather.

Weekend Travel

Permitted loads are allowed travel from Sunrise to 12:00 noon on Saturdays, and are restricted from travel on Sundays.

Holiday Restrictions

Permitted loads are restricted from traveling on the following Holidays:

  • New Years Day  -  January 1st
  • Memorial Day  -  Last Monday in May
  • Independence Day  -  July 4th
  • Labor Day  -  First Monday in September
  • Thanksgiving Day  -  Fourth Thursday in November
  • Christmas Day  -  December 25th

Divisible Loads

Permits will not be issued for loads that can be reduced in size or weight.  All permitted loads must be reduced to their lowest possible dimensions and weights.


Parts and attachments that are removable must be removed if any axle weight requires bridge engineering analysis.  Instead of removing parts, additional axles/dollies may be used to reduce all axles below bridge analysis thresholds.  A dozer with an attached blade in excess of 12' wide, but no greater than 15' wide may be hauled on a highway if a traffic protection guide rail device is securely fastened to the dozer and if no axle weight exceeds bridge analysis threshold.

Restricted Travel

Permitted loads will be restricted from travel during inclement weather such as snow, ice, driving rain, heavy fog, etc. or other conditions that cause reduced visibility, or cause cargo to sway.

Pennsylvania Turnpike dimension restrictions are as follows:  85' long x 10' wide x 13'6" high and 125,000 lbs. with 5' overhang allowed in front and rear.  To exceed these dimensions on the Turnpike, a permit is required and must be acquired from the Turnpike Authority.  Maximum permit width is 11'6" wide, and 125,000 lbs., and an escort will be required on loads that are greater than 90' long x 11' wide.

Movement under permit in urbanized areas is authorized seven (7) days a week only during the following time periods:  3:00 - 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to Sunset.  Movement is restricted to the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. through For Pitt, Squirrel Hills and Liberty Tunnels in Alleghany County.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles that are 160' long x 16' wide x 14'6" high and 201,000 lbs. or more are considered Super-loads.  Applications must be submitted to the Central Permit Office and must include a justification of shipment explaining why the cargo cannot be reduced in size or weight.  Permit application must be submitted at least three (3) weeks in advance of movement for processing and approval.  Loads that require Police Escorts must submit their applications to State Police at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance of anticipated shipping date.
