When Escorts are Needed: # of Escorts:

Note: Escort vehicle shall be required to maintain radio communication with the operator for the
permitted vehicle and shall also be required to be equipped with a roof mounted amber flashing
or rotating light. Driver of the escort vehicle is to act as a flagman when needed.
Lead escort vehicle, when required, is to process 500 feet in advance of permit vehicle/load.
Rear escort vehicle when required is to follow 500 feet behind permit vehicle load.
Effective as of June, 2000, all commercial vehicle operated under a permit and escorted by the
Ohio State Highway Patrol must have a MCSAP inspection prior to movement.  Out of state
inspections will not be honored unless the inspection resulted in CVSA decal being awarded.

Overhang Requirements:

Maximum allowed on tractor/trailer not to exceed 55' (fifty five feet) overall length, will need flags during day and lights at night. Overhang exceeding these dimensions will require a permit.

Police Escorts:

$39.50 per hour - minimum of 4 hours. $19.00 per hour for car use + turnaround fee.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for five (5) consecutive days.

Operating Time

Loads that are permitted for Over-dimensions are allowed travel during daytime hours only.  Loads that are permitted for weight only may travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.  Loads that are up to 12' wide may travel during daylight hours only, seven (7) days a week.

Weekend Travel

Loads that are permitted for weight only are allowed travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.  Loads that are permitted over 12' wide are allowed travel until 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Divisible Loads

Permitted loads must be reduced to their lowest possible size.


A dozer with a blade exceeding 14' wide must place a protector device on it.  If no protector is placed, the blade must be removed and shipped as a separate load.  No restrictions on dozer blade if its width does not exceed 12' wide.  No permits will be issued for dozers with blade with of over 15' wide.  In this case, blade must be removed and shipped as separate load.

Travel Restrictions

Turnpike Restrictions:  Turnpike travel is restricted to loads with dimensions of 70' long x 8'6 wide and 90,000 lbs. GVW.

Travel is restricted for all loads in excess of 12' wide within a twenty-five (25) mile radius of Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, and within the corporate limits of Akron, Canton, Dayton, Lima, Toledo, and Youngstown between 6:30 - 9:00 a.m. and 4:40 - 6:00 p.m. Permitted loads are restricted from travel during Inclement weather.

Holiday Restrictions

Overweight only vehicles/loads may move on Holidays/Holiday weekends if they are traveling with a valid Special Hauling Permit.  Over-dimension and/or over-dimensions/over-weight vehicles/loads may not move on the Holiday/Holidays weekends listed below.

  • New Years Day  -  12:00 noon on December 31st to Sunrise on January 3rd
  • Good Friday/Easter  -  Sunrise on April 22nd to Sunrise on April 25th
  • Memorial Day  -  12:00 noon on May 27th to Sunrise to May 31st
  • Independence Day  -  12:00 noon on July 1st to Sunrise on July 5th
  • Labor Day  -  12:00 noon on September 2nd to Sunrise on September 6th
  • Thanksgiving  -  12:00 noon on November 23rd to Sunrise on November 25th
  • Christmas  -  12:00 noon on December 23rd to Sunrise on December 26th

On the following Holidays, movement is allowed, but ODOT permit offices will be closed:

  • Martin Luther King, JR. Day  -  January 17th
  • Presidents Day  -  February 21st
  • Columbus Day  -  October 10th
  • Veterans Day  -  November 11th

Spring Weight Restrictions

There are no Seasonal Weight Restrictions for the State of Ohio.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles that are 14' wide x 14'6 high and 120,000 lbs. or more are considered Super-loads.  In the state of Ohio, Super-load length will be assessed on a case by case basis.  All essential details such as axle weight, axle spacing, number of tires, etc. must be included with Super-load application.  Super-load applications should be allowed up to five (5) days for processing and approval.
