Overhang Requirements:

Maximum legal overhang allowed is 3' (three feet) front and 4' (four feet) rear.
Overhang exceeding these dimensions will require over-length permits.

Police Escorts:

$75.64 per hour - $0.63 per mile - round trip. If shipment meets super load requirements, supervisor will be needed at $91.98 per hour. Price may vary a few dollars plus or minus for each region in the state, but the above is an accurate average.

Permits Valid For:

Single trip permits are valid for five (5) travel days.  Extensions and revisions may be granted at a fee of $16.00
*Highway Patrol escorts are required on all Over-height loads using the Bay Bridge.

Operating Times

Travel is allowed twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week (but must be requested at the time the permit is ordered) unless the following occur:

  • Escort is required
  • Load exceeds a two (2) vehicle configuration
  • Load exceeds "Green" loading weight
  • A detour is required
  • Load width exceeds lane width

In any of the above cases, travel will be restricted to one-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunrise.

Weekend Travel

Weekend travel is allowed when no escort is required as long as vehicle combination does not exceed two (2) vehicles and loading does not exceed "Green" weight.   Also, no weekend travel is allowed is load required detours off of State Routes.

Divisible Loads

Permitted loads must be reduced to their lowest possible form.


Blades, buckets, counterweights, etc. are not required to be removed.  Booms, mast, machinery or other equipment which is not attendant to the efficient operation of the body of the vehicle but which may be attached to the body, or chassis, or connected with the driving mechanism, shall be regarded as a part of the load.

Restricted Travel

Operators of vehicles over 10' wide may not travel Monday through Friday through the following areas at the times noted:

Los Angeles and vicinity                                         6:00 - 9:00 a.m.            3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Sacramento and vicinity                                         7:00 - 9:00 a.m.            4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

San Diego and vicinity                                             7:00 - 9:00 a.m.            4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

*San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge                      6:30 - 9:00 a.m.             3:30 - 6:30 p.m.

San Francisco and vicinity                                      7:00 - 9:00 a.m.             4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

*Loads over 11' wide and all over-height loads require Highway Patrol escort.  Over 12' wide the travel is restricted to 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Spring Weight Restrictions

Summer Weight Restrictions: When on San Bernardino County desert roads, permit travel for an overweight load is allowed only until 10:00 a.m. from June 1st until October 15th.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles exceeding 135' long x 15' wide x 17' high and 250,000 lbs. are considered Super-loads. Engineer drawings and justification of shipment are required on all applications.  Special variance must be approved and may require a thirty (30) day notice.
