Overhang Requirements:

Maximum overhang allowed is 75' (seventy five feet) - permitted combination hauling
1 item or truck/tractor/48' semitrailer combination hauling multiple items in line.

Police Escorts:

$36.00 per hour per Trooper - $0.20 a mile + $50.00 admin fee applicable to all loads.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for ten (10) calendar days.  Return trips may be granted if requested at the time of application.

Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset, Monday through Saturday.  Loads having legal dimensions, and not exceeding 112,000 lbs. may have continuous travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

Weekend Travel

Permitted travel is allowed on Saturdays from Sunrise to Sunset.  Permitted loads are restricted from travel on Sundays.

Divisible Loads

Permitted loads must be reduced to their smallest possible dimensions and weights.

Exceptions

Blades may be hauled attached as long as the width does not exceed 14' wide.  A blade which has been removed may be hauled with the main piece of cargo without being considered a divisible load.

Restricted Travel

Permitted loads that are over 12' wide are restricted from travel within a ten (10) mile radius of the following cities from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Superload Requirements

In North Carolina, Super-loads are determined on a case by case basis.  Generally, loads that are 15' wide and 132,000 lbs. or more are considered Super-loads, but this is subject to change depending on Route.  Size of cargo and desired route must be submitted to the NCDOT with permit application in order to be determined Super-load.

Super-load applications must include drawing/diagram of cargo and hauling vehicle showing weight on each axle, distance between each axle and overall dimensions.  Must also include Company name of shipper, and requested route of travel.  Super-load applications should be allowed between ten (10) and fourteen (14) business days for processing and approval.  Bridge analysis review should be allowed three (3) days for processing and approval.
