*No such road building machinery, vehicle, traction engine, steam roller or other apparatus or machinery having a height, including load or equipment or apparatus connected therewith, in excess of 14' (fourteen feet) shall be operated, driven, propelled or conveyed along or across a public road or highway in which is located overhead wires of a street railway, traction company or electric light or power company at any time, unless employees of the street railway, traction company or electric light or power company are present prepared to superintend the necessary movement or change in the wires, or to make immediate repairs thereof in case of injury thereto

Overhang Requirements:

Maximum legal overhang allowed is 3' (three feet) in front and 4' (four feet) in rear.
Overhang exceeding these dimensions will require an over length permit.

Police Escorts:

No Police escorts required for the state of New Jersey. Some Superloads may require assistance from Sate Police if load requires road closures, charges TBD upon review from D.O.T. of load, distance, and time involved.

Permits Valid For:

Single Trip Permits are valid for three (3) days.

Operating Time

Permitted loads are allowed travel from Sunrise to Sunset Monday through Friday.  Vehicles that have legal dimensions and are permitted for Over-weight only are allowed travel twenty-four (24) hours a day, Seven (7) days a week.

Weekend Travel

Permitted loads are allowed travel on Saturdays until 12:00 noon, and are restricted from travel on Sundays.

Divisible Loads

Permits are only issued for over-size and over-weight loads which cannot be dismantled or reduced.  All permitted loads must be reduced to their lowest possible dimensions and weights.

Exceptions

There are no exceptions to the Divisible Load Laws in the State of New Jersey.

Restricted Travel

Tractor Trailers that are 8'6รถ wide are prohibited on NJ Route 495 and the Holland Tunnel.

Special Hauling Permits are not valid on the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, and the Atlantic City Expressway.

An over-size trip permit is not valid on the New Jersey Turnpike.  The Turnpike is restricted to legal vehicles only.  Turnpike Authority contact: (908)-247-0900

Spring Weight Restrictions

There are no Seasonal Weight Restrictions in the State of New Jersey.

Superload Requirements

Loads or vehicles that are 120' long x 18' wide x 16' high and 180,000 lbs. are considered Super-loads.  Loads or vehicles that are over 150,000 lbs. GVW require special clearance through the New Jersey Department of Transportation.  Super-load permit applications must include a drawing/diagram that includes axle weights, axle spacing, number of tires, and tire size.  Anything over routine issue will require a police officers name and badge number for special clearance.

Super-load permits are valid for five (5) days.  Super-load permit applications should be allowed up to fifteen (15) days for processing and approval.
